History of Haiti

 

            Haiti at one point in the 1700’s was under the French rule, and was the wealthiest country in the new world. They also became the first country in the new world to abolish slavery. There fortunes declined in the 20th century from three decades of natural disasters,multiple regimes, environmental devastation,also onset of HIV, and American Occupation. From Haiti’s slave revolt it tore apart most of the country. Since new slave owners were taking land from the revolution France made them pay a sum of 150 million to become recognized as a free independent country. The biggest hit to Haiti was the occupation of the United States. They controlled everything from banks,revenues, to construction. Only thing they did not control was education. The U.S. Implanted heavy aid programs for the U.S. Governed Haitian leaders. The Haitian elite and Haitian Government a long with natural disasters continue to be the root cause of suffering for Haiti’s government.
